On the eve of the 25th anniversary of McLaren's magnificent maiden victory at Le Mans, the Woking-based marque has unveiled a special edition 720S inspired by the mighty, triumphant F1 GTR. It was the first and only time that a manufacturer has won on its debut appearance at this French endurance classic. This sensation was made possible by a GT vehicle developed for the road and not, as is usual, with a specially developed prototype. That made this achievement all the more amazing. Only available in McLaren Orange or Sarthe Gray, the 720S Le Mans features five-spoke alloy wheels, anti-lift louvers on the front fenders and a roof-mounted, working air intake - all features a direct credit to the F1 GTR. Logos specially designed for the 25th anniversary are applied to the bodywork and are also embroidered on the neckrests of the carbon fiber bucket seats. There is also a steering wheel marker at twelve o'clock and a plaque affixed to the interior commemorating this historic victory. Of course, the well-known great performance data and the extraordinary suitability for everyday use of the 720S have been retained for this special model.
Only 50 examples of the special edition McLaren 720S Le Mans were built, of which 16 were intended for customers in Europe. Each chassis number of the sports car begins with the number 298 – that is how many laps the F1 GTR, which was victorious at Le Mans in 1995, had to complete before it was the first to cross the checkered flag. All 50 models are numbered by chassis number in ascending order from 01-50!
